Gaviscon Original Liquid Peppermint is an antacid remedy used to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, acid indigestion, and gastric reflux. It is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over, and comes in a refreshing peppermint flavour.

How It Works

When you swallow Gaviscon Original Liquid, its active ingredients react with the acid in your stomach to form a thick, raft-like gel that floats on top of the stomach contents. This gel acts as a physical barrier, helping to prevent stomach acid from rising back up into the oesophagus (food pipe), which is what causes the burning sensation of heartburn and reflux. The antacid components also help to neutralise excess stomach acid, providing quick and soothing relief.

Directions for Use

Adults and children aged 12 and over: take 10–20 ml (2–4 teaspoons) after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day. Do not exceed 80 ml in any 24-hour period. Per 10 ml dose:
• Sodium alginate 500 mg
• Sodium bicarbonate 267 mg
• Calcium carbonate 160 mg

Possible Side Effects

Gaviscon Original Liquid is generally well tolerated, but some people may experience:
• Bloating or flatulence (wind)
• Feeling of fullness or nausea
• Mild changes in bowel habit (e.g., constipation or loose stools)
• Allergic reactions (rare) — such as skin rash or itching

Who Should Not Take This Medicine

Do not take Gaviscon Original Liquid if you:
• Are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients
• Have been advised to follow a low-sodium (salt-restricted) diet, as this product contains sodium
• Are a child under 12 years of age (unless directed by a doctor)
• Have been told by your doctor to avoid calcium or sodium-containing medicines
• Have kidney problems — consult your doctor before use

Interactions

Gaviscon Original Liquid may affect the absorption of some medicines if taken at the same time. It is advisable to leave at least 2 hours between taking Gaviscon and other medicines, particularly antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones), thyroid medicines, bisphosphonates, and iron supplements. The antacid ingredients may also interact with medicines whose absorption is affected by stomach acidity. Tell your PillSorted pharmacist or doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and supplements.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Gaviscon Original Liquid contains relatively high levels of sodium, so it should be used with caution during pregnancy. It is generally considered safe for short-term use during breastfeeding, but individual circumstances should always be considered. Speak to your doctor or PillSorted pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Alcohol

There is no known direct interaction between Gaviscon Original Liquid and alcohol. However, alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, so it is advisable to limit alcohol consumption while experiencing these symptoms.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Gaviscon Original Liquid does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You can continue with your normal daily activities after taking this medicine.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Once opened, the product should be used within the period stated on the packaging. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
